From Kiwi Flat, head up the Wilberforce River. There is generally good travel on the flats on the TR, and a faint 4WD track can be followed until the junction with Griffith Stream.

Griffith Stream is a shin-deep, straightforward crossing in mid-summer low flows. On the flats opposite, a 4WD track quickly meets a muddy dead-end in the swampy ground — travel is generally better skirting the edge of the flats, or walking in the gravel riverbed.

Urquhart's Hut (approximately 12.5km from Kiwi Flat, and nestled among bush on top of a short embankment) is a small historical hut. Though it would not be comfortable to sleep in, it makes for an interesting lunch/snack stop.

Past Urquhart's, the Wilberforce Valley begins to narrow, but the river is also quite small this far up its catchment. Around the confluence with Gifford Stream the flats mostly end, and walking is increasingly in the riverbed, making crossings (shin-deep in low summer flows) as needed.

Park Morpeth Hut is reached just above the confluence of the Wilberforce and Cronin Stream, on the TL bank of the Wilberforce. It is a handsome, weather-worthy hut with a water tank and tap outside, although it unfortunately lacks heating.
