Work your way across the saddle on tussocky leads; there is an old track in places. Ascend through the bush and some large rocks to pt 1058m. Follow the ridge up to pt 1228m. There are remnants of an old track along the ridge in places although it disappears in any scrub or rocky sections. Travel is slow with numerous rocks. The main difficulty is the descent from pt 1228m; we slithered down very steep scrub but there is probably a better line. Once past pt 1236m, it is easier tussocky slopes to Mt Clarke. There is an old rough track on the Mt Clarke descent. Join into the Mataketake track and descend to the Haast-Paringa Cattle Track.
