From Hauroko Burn Hut the Dusky Track heads up valley, closely following the true right banks of the Hauroko Burn until a walk wire crosses to the true left after about 3 hours (incorrectly signposted at the walk wire as the Gardner Burn). Much of this first section is quite flat and is fast walking in dry conditions. Once on the true left of the Hauroko Burn, the track climbs steeply above a gorge and then meanders up and down for a kilometre over rough terrain before returning to river level. More flats are followed until a clearing is reached, Halfway Hut is located at the southern end of the clearing.

The track crosses several unbridged side streams that may cause problems following heavy rain.
