This is an old NZFS track. At Park Forks, on the true right of the Park River, head upstream briefly & pick up the route, which starts approximately halfway between the un-named stream that drains directly east of Nichols & a large slip directly above the Park River Waiohine River confluence. The track climbs very steeply initially to the 780m contour & spur that leads up from the mouth of the un-named stream. Beyond the 780m contour, the gradient 'eases', but the route remains steep, till at least the 920m contour, where a brief respite is had, before the final very steep climb up the spur to the bushline at the 1120m contour. A further 100m of climbing reaches the flat top of Nichols & the main range track.
