Hi Hugh. This is all good stuff - and I really appreciate the time you're putting into this. Getting the thing usable and intuitive is the current priority, before I can expect others to start contributing routes.

So, I'm thinking of the following:

Help:
=====
1) A help link / button on each page which brings up a window with a step-by-step guide to 'how to add a place' or 'how to add a route' or whatever the page does.
2) A (?) next to each field which you hover over for details of what goes in that field.

(1) above would include all the info in (2) but would also explain the flow through the process.

Edit, Save, Cut, Paste, etc:
=====================
I originally had these as buttons with words on them, but it looked untidy, so I swapped to icons with pictures. Do you think that these are not obvious enough and need changing back to buttons? Or do you think that the above help and hover-over tooltips will be enough to explain them?

Where am I?:
===========
'I keep wanting to click and see where I am, on the adjoining map.'. Do you mean you want a button somewhere that you click to centre the map on the current place/route/trip? If so, that is already on my backlist of features to add. I'll happily move it to the top of the list, if that's what you're referring to. One question on that - I had not decided whether this button should just centre the map on the place/route at the current resolution, or also zoom in too. I was considering zooming to either (1:50000) or (the whole route/trip) if it didn't all fit at that resolution.

Finding your routes / places / stories
=============================
Search for a place / route / trip / story by name is currently the next feature on my priority list. This will be a search screen where you type in the text and it returns any results that contain what you type. I had envisioned a search feature under each category (place, route, trip, story) - effectively replacing the current 'browse' screen. But another option is a centralised search that returns places and routes and trips and stories in one place. Do you have any thoughts on that one?

BTW: you're welcome to use email to carry on this conversation, or continue here to allow others to comment, whichever is easier. Email is mattbriggs@yahoo.com

the hover-tool tips that do come up read like reminders of what to do - not what the button does or what each user step is ....

ok - found the edit pencil, and used add location. When I'm reading routeguides/stories/places I keep wanting to click and see where I am, on the adjoining map.

and let some one like me who didn't code the page write the tips. When every click point has its tool-tip your help system is done. ?

for a first level of help - what if each 'tool button' link had a mouse hover - tool tip . (and each page had a turn hover help on/off option)

I guess that also answers your question "is it intuitive?" :-) Allright - next question -

Can I edit (ie keep adding to) my now existing story (or place, or route ...) ? If so - how?

Hi Hugh. Thanks for the feedback. Throughout the site you'll see green plus symbols next to fields. By clicking the plus you enable selecting/drawing on the map as a way of entering information into that field. Once you have selected the place or drawn the route you want, you need to click on the tick (which appeared in place of the plus) to confirm and save the information you have drawn..

So for creating a place:
- Click the plus next to the Location field, then click on the map at the place you want the coordinates for, then click the tick next to the Location box to confirm it. The grid reference will be entered in the box for you.

For creating a route:
- the + next to 'from' and 'to' let you select an existing place from the map as the 'from' or 'to' place.
- the + next to 'Route Points' enables drawing of a route on the map. Click the plus, then click once on the map to start drawing, then once for each point on the route, then double click to finish. Don't forget to click the tick next to 'Route Points' to confirm your route.

I am aware that I need to get this information displayed on the webpage somewhere as help. Maybe a help link on each page which brings up a window with tips like this?

adding a new 'place' - needs to have click on map location to add x and y (lat, long?)
