From Clarke Creek the track disappears and becomes a river-route until 400m below the old Kokatahi Hut site / swingbridge. This is moderate to difficult going in normal conditions, boulder hopping with occasional sidles into the bush. The permolat team have marked a rough high-water sidle track along the valleyside, but in most conditions the river is still easier and faster going. Look out for DoC triangles 400m below the bridge marking the start of the track on the true left.

The track is well marked and cut from the bridge to the new Top Kokatahi Hut /old biv site, but crosses the Kokatahi River several times (old 260-series maps incorrectly show no crossings).
