Cross rolling terrain on Scott/Kay Saddle to pass west of of Peak 1552, descending a grassy slope down to the flat terrain of Scott Basin. Easy travel is had across the basin, and in Dec 2017 the larger tarn on the map was completely dried up so there was camping here. North of the basin an obvious gully comes down from higher up. This gully can be followed all the way up to nearly the 1700m contour under Upper Peak. Snow in the higher portion the gully can be avoided by following the ridge of the eastern wall of the gully which is a mixture of grass or good rock the whole way up. Bluffs make dropping down early to the Scott/Kowhai saddle impractical as you draw near it, so keep ascending until you reach a large, steep scree slope which drops down to just south of the tarn on the saddle. Descend the scree and cross through boulders to reach the saddle.
