From the stamped metal sign post atop pt. 1408 the route heads south along the main Kaweka range, dropping into a small saddle before ascending to the Mackintosh Spur junction on the next immediate knob. The junction is marked with a stamped metal signpost, indicating Mackintosh Hut to the east & Kiwi Saddle Hut to the west.

North of Mackintosh Spur, the poled route follows the Kaweka Main range 500m north through a small saddle to pt. 1408. A signpost on the summit marks the turnoff for the southern access to Studholme Saddle Hut.
