From Mid King Bv, follow the DOC triangle ENE up to the spur, gaining some 100m. Then follow the scrubby spur east down towards Mitre. Going is tough at first but around 1100m you enter good pen bush. From here a good ground trail leads down the spur to the valley floor. From the confluence of Baldy Creek and South Mitre Stream, head downriver in the riverbed until you hit the Mitre Hut Track. The river is ankle deep in normal flows, but can clearly flood. Mitre flats Hut is 100m north up the track.
When descending, about 3/4 the way down, look for small rock cairn with accompanying pink markers where the track bears right. Similarly as you near Baldy creek the track again bares right before meeting Baldy creek
