A good benched track heads up the true left (north/west) of the Greenstone from the carpark to the Greenstone/Caples confluence. Ensure you take the right hand track at the gate 500m from the carpark and do not cross the swingbridge here.

Remaining on the TL, the track heads downstream although leaving the river 30m below. Just before the gate that accesses the parking area and trailhead is a track junction (the swing bridge that can be seen through the trees leads to the Lake Rere loop track).
