At the northern end of the flat gravel area at Maymorn Jn, a track cuts north along the ridge where the road starts to drop NNE towards the Waiotauru. The signpost is frequently destroyed.

The track follows the ridge north over several small knobs through tall bush before finally climbing the tussock and scrub southern face of Kapakapanui to reach a signposted track junction. The trig and summit at 50m further north.

Several spurs proved routes east and west off this section, most notable the long spur west of pt890. If you take this, be prepared to drop slightly south of the forks at its base or you will hit steep, broken faces.
