From Lake Roe Hut, a muddy marked track climbs the hillside up to the plateau Lake Roe lies in. Rolling country leads down to the western side of the large lake. For those wanting to explore the area, Pt1037 is well worth a side trip up for its extensive views over Furkert Pass and down to the Lake Roe Hut, while Pt1072 looks straight down the Hauroko Burn Valley. Carrying on, there is more rolling terrain east of Lake Roe which is crossed via a series of ridges, before dropping down to the stream flowing out of the obvious valley under the soaring cliffs of Pt1595.
Head around the small unnamed lake in the stream. At the head of the lake, a scree slope continues up into the valley, the stream shown on the map now underground. Climb up the scree and through the valley, keeping an eye and ear out for Rock Wren which live around here. Climbing towards the lowest point on the skyline will take you up to the southwestern end of spectacular Lake1198.
Bluffs drop into the lake just north of the outlet, blocking a northern traverse around the lake for those who don't feel like swimming, so the southern side of the lake is travlled around, climbing 20-40 metres above the southeastern side to get around some more bluffs. It looked like Pt1358 could be accessed from here. Continue traversing northwards up the eastern side of the lake, and begin climbing up a scree slope to the north and then northeast. A mixture of grass and rock is climbed the rest of the way up to access the crest of the ridge in a rocky saddle immediately southeast of Pt1566. Lake1101 is just in view from the northern side of the saddle, and it looked like a straightforward climb to reach Pt1458 and points forther south from here.
