From the park boundary (slot gorge on right) head 100m upriver and climb the first slip to the ridgeline to the north, Going starts scrubby but open out to first mature manuka and later towering podocarp. A good ground trail is present along the ridgeline, but it is not marked or cut. Swing NE with the ridge after 500m, and follow another 500m to where another ridge joins from the NNW.
Follow the ridgeline NNW towards the hut. Severe windfall has rendered what was a good, well traveled route into a bushbash. Sticking to the ridgeline you'll hit the 4WD track 50m south of the hut.
