From the Standfield Hut track turnoff, Takapari road loops west round the head of Diggers Stream, remaining high on the Ruahine tops. A steep descent shortly after the turnoff is tricky in 2WD but find in a 4WD with some clearance. The Diggers Hut track is reached shortly before the road starts to descent towards the Pohongina valley.

From the Diggers Hut track turnoff, Takapari road loops east round the head of Diggers Stream, remaining high on the Ruahine tops. A steep ascent shortly before pt1170 is likely to be as far as can be reached in low-clearance 2WD vehicles, but is fine in a 4WD. The Standfield hut turnoff is signposted and obvious - the track visible heading NE along the main range.
