A good riverbed route runs between Duckville and the Weremata-Mangahoanga confluence. The top 1km has some of the dense ongaonga (nettle) issues found above Duckville, but below that the plant becomes sparse and not the impediment it was. Travel is on the riverbed with some sections on the banks. No track exists. River travel was ankle to knee deep on slippery small riverstones in normal flows.

The Mangahoanga is the first major creek to join from the east, reached after 4.5km. The Casino Hut track starrts about 150m up this side creek. The creek junction is marked by a solitary DOC triangle on the base of a fallen tree, visible only when looking upstream.
