From Mitre Flats hut, head briefly downstream to the confluence, and then up South Mitre Stream. This requires a few crossings - ankle deep in normal flows but a huge riverbed so it can clearly flood. Pass Baldy creek joining from your right and continue up Sth Mitre until the spur to your west starts to look good travel.

Leave the riverbed and climb west up the face onto the spur. A good ground trail runs up the spur through open bush to the bushedge at 1100m. From the bushedge, scramble on up the scrubby ridgeline until you hit triangles at around the 1200m contour. A triangle-marked route drops WSW off the spur into the basin to its south, dropping 100m to reach Mid King Biv, which is where the map says it should be.
