A well user route runs down the spur from Dorset Hut to the river - unmarked but for occasional flagging tape. Following the river downstream is easy going, but knee to waist deep in pools. After about 1.5km, after the second creek joins from the true left, head up the spur downstream of the forks. This is good climbing in open bush except for a band of cutty-grass between 900 and 100m. At pt1118 you reach the top and join the main McGregor ridge. Follow it up, SE. I didn;t find the tran marked on maps. When you exit the bush into tussock and scrub, climb above the worst of the scrub and sidle left to where McGregor Biv sits on the bushedge on a side-spur dropping north.
