A good, wide, cut, marked track heads from the swingbridge up Totora Creek. Crossing the creek it climbs steadily but easily to join the Mt Holdsworth Track at a signposted junction. One the initial steep climb has been done, a lightly worn route on the left side of the eroded rooty track makes travel much easier until the track begins to level out a couple of hundred metres before the junction.
This route is the "old track" the new one being closed due to abutment erosion on the lower of the two new swingbridges (which can be seen from the old track not far from the hut) and differs to the one shown on the new topo maps.
