This route crosses private land belonging to Waterloo Burn Station, and was written in a time before the Te Ararora Trail was a thing, bringing hundreds of people to this valley each year. Permission should be sought before using this route.
A 4WD track runs down the eastern side of the valley, meandering up and down but staying above the swamps in the mid valley. It provides good travel all the way down to across the valley from the Aparima Huts. Cross boggy terrain, ford the river, and climb up to the huts.
