From tree line, push northwestwards though low scrub to reach the forest above Death Creek. Climb up through the trees via a gully and when you hit the tree line try and locate a trail that leads through the knee high scrub climbing further up the hill. Drop down to Death Creek once you spot the cairn on the boulder. Initially follow the true left through light scrub but cross to the true right once the going opens up and continue up valley. The outlet stream from the unnamed tarn in Death Valley is where you cross Death Creek back to the true left. Climb a ridge here which leads all the way up to flat terrain west of the tarn.

Head west from the lake, then descend steep slopes down to Death Creek. Cross the stream to the true right and head down valley. Decent travel can be had down to about 1100m where scrub is encountered, and easier travel might be had in the stream bed.
Near the bottom of the valley the scrub belt thickens considerably before the creek drops away down a gorge. At about 1060m make sure you're on the true left side and look for a cairn mounted ontop of a large boulder on the edge of the stream. Behind the boulder should lie a low ridge with exposed gravelly patches visible through scrub. A ground trail can be found leading up onto the northern end of the ridge.
Continue following the trail as it heads along the ridge crest through knee-high scrub before dropping straight down to the bush tongue extending up from the Kay. Push into the bush to find reasonable open beach forest dropping down the hillside via a gully, parallel to Death Creek
At the bottom of the gully, push out into scrubby flats at about 940m. A large rock should be visible ahead of you. From the summit of the rock you should be just able to glimpse a large orange triangle at the bush edge southeast of you. Follow trails that snake through the scrub to reach the triangle which marks the beginning of the Kay Creek track, and follow it for about 50 metres to reach the historic Kay Creek hut which was restored in 2016.
