From the Mt Brown turnoff, an old dray road runs up the northern side of the Styx - easy travel on embankments and cuttings. Later the dray road is replaced by a narrower benched pack track, winding in and out of side guts, but still easy travel. After 6km, a signpost points right across the river to Mid Styx Hut. This is the easternmost access to Mid Styx Hut - the western access via Tyndall Creek is harder with no good crossing at the forks.

The benched pack track continues down the north bank of the Styx River from the Mid Styx junction. Going is fast and easy. Lower down the pack track becomes a dray road - broad and flat with cuttings and embankments. The turnoff to Mt Brown is 200m upstream of a large slip/bluff on the northern valleyside.
