The Tawawharara valley is steep-sided, the riverbed rock. Upriver form the Hareirei confluence, a couple of log-jams blocked the flow - the tallest 3m high, and passed only by some rock-climbing. Conditions will clearly change frequently.

The stream is small, and no trouble in normal flows - but when the stream is up there would be no way down the valley.

The Manairoa confluence is the next upriver.
