From the Waiopehu Track turnoff, the Ohau River Track heads east, upriver. Alternately sidling the valleyside and crossing marshy wooded river flats, it is an easy, if muddy walk. After about 3km, a signpost marks the start of the 6 Disc Track, climbing west to join the Waiopehu Track. The Blackwater Stream bridge is just beyond, and on the other side another sign posted track junction marks the start of the Gable End track towards Te Matawai Hut.

From the Gable End track junction the Ohau RIver track crosses Blackwater Stream on a bridge and passes the turnoff (left) to 6 Disc Track. Continuing downstream on marshy, forested river flats it's an easy but muddy walk downriver. 100m before reaching the bushedge a signpost marks the Waiopehu Track which joins from the south.
