Route to connect Rodger Inlet Huts and Green Lake Hut via Cleughearn Peak.
From the end of the track that continues West from Rodger Inlet huts continue to Pt. 1315. Continue along ridge line through Pt. 1264, 1316, 1260. The terrain along the ridge is mainly tussocks. There is dense (pretty much impassable in places) scrub around the gullies, which are dried up. Near Pt. 1170 on the ridge, to the West there are some springs a few hundred metres down.
Lots of space to camp, with fresh water, at just under ~1200m where the gully below Cleughearn Peak flattens out.
Continue up gully to the saddle at ~1320m and then up further to ~1470m to the saddle below Cleughearn Peak.
Cleaughearn Peak (1578m) is easy to reach from here, an short walk, and you can leave your pack on the saddle. The peak offers great views, and you can see all the way to Stewart Island on a good day.
Continue along the ridge to the North until reaching another ridge to the North East of Pt 1490. Follow this down to The Devil's Punchbowl. Cross the stream, and continue around at ~1160m. Up until here the terrain is easy, tussocks with light scree in some places.
The North face has more difficult terrain, with challenging but passable scrub in some gullies. Contiue until reaching the ridge at ~1130m where the vegetation becomes easier once again. Follow the ridge Northe East to Mt Cuthbert (1248m). There are some cliffs on the North face but easily avoidable.
The decent from Mt Cuthbert becomes more difficult. There is much thicker vegetation here, with tall and difficult to pass scrub. Aim for the small hill at ~140m as this hill is clear.
Decending from this hill through the tree line is easy. Trees are spaced, and there is little vegetation on the ground. Let me know if you find my sunglasses in the trees :) Once you leave the tree line at the river, you will find yourself at the track, which you can't miss. Follow this track to Green Lake Hut.
